Nigeria: Rep commends passage of bill to establish Federal University, Pankshin

Rep. Yusuf Gadgi, the Chairman, House Committee on Navy, has commended the House of Representatives for passing a bill to establish Federal University, Pankshin, in Plateau State.

Gadgi gave the commendation in an interview with the News Agency Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja.

He said that the ongoing efforts toward development of education in Nigeria would be boosted through the passage of the bill.

NAN recalled that the bill which seeks to establish the University of Education in Pankshin, Plateau State, scaled through Third Reading in Oct. 14, on the floor of the House of Representatives.

The bill was passed at the Committee of the Whole house sequel to the adoption of the report and recommendations of the House Committee on Tertiary Education.

Gadgi said that the university would be a training institution for the development of teacher education in the country.

He listed the objectives of the University as stipulated in the bill to include: encourage the advancement of learning and to hold out to all persons without distinction of race, creed.

Others are sex or political conviction, develop and offer academic programmes leading to the award of certificates, first degrees, post-graduate diploma and higher degrees.

This, according to him, will come with emphasis on planning, developmental and adaptive skills in education, technology, applied science, and agriculture, among others.

The lawmaker said that the University would also act as agents and catalysts for effective educational system, through post-graduate training, research and innovation.

He added that this would be for effective economic utilisation and conservation of the country’s human resources as well as bringing quality change in education, by focusing on teacher education through teaching and learning innovations.

He urged President Muhammadu Buhari to assent to the bill to fast track the process of training teachers in the country.
