The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) on Tuesday advised producers to adhere to laws, certifications and inspections that would promote acceptance of their packaged products in export market.
The Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NEPC, Dr Ezra Yakusak, gave the advice on Tuesday at a one-day workshop on: “Legal Aspect of Packaging for Export”.
The event held in Benin.
Yakusak was represented by the Head of Legal Unit of NEPC, Mrs Julie Onmoke.
He said that Nigeria had good products for export but many exporters were unable to package the products to meet international standards.
He said exporters would need to properly package their products.
“Export products, apart from being properly packaged, must meet with relevant requirements, necessary certification and inspection from appropriate government agencies.
“Exporters must adhere to all processes to get their products to be properly packaged with the relevant packaging materials for products to be exported,” he added.
The Trade Promotion Advisor of NEPC, Benin Office, Mrs Ngozi Ibe, said that the workshop was organised to promote export of non-oil products.
Ibe said that the workshop would upgrade skills of exporters, potential exporters and other stakeholders toward proper packaging of products for export.
She said that adhering to legal packaging procedures would avoid export-related litigation.
She assured of the council’s readiness to guide all agro-allied exporters and entrepreneurs to achieve success in their export businesses.
Some of the participants at the workshop praised the organisers, saying it was timely to promote acceptance of made-in-Nigeria goods at the international market.
One of the participants, Mr Andrew Oshogwe, CEO, Rural Builders Organisation, said that the workshop had created awareness on what exporters must know about packaging.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that participants were educated on the essence of product packaging, product design, specification of origin of products and use of recyclable packaging materials, among others.
